Nzuddi are traditional Sicilian biscuits, particularly from the cities of Messina and Catania.
These delicious treats, made with almonds and spicy aromas, are closely tied to local religious celebrations, such as the feast of the Madonna della Lettera in Messina.
Their history is rooted in monastic culture, with a name that may derive from the Monastery of the Vincentian Sisters in Catania.
Perfect for celebrating festivities, Nzuddi offer a taste experience that combines the crunchiness of almonds with the sweetness of honey and spices.

👨‍🍳 Preparation

  1. 1

Blend the eggs, sugar, baking ammonia, lard, and orange zest until smooth.

  2. 2

Add the water, almonds, honey, and finally the flour, mixing well.

  3. 3

Shape the dough into round biscuits about 1 cm thick.

  4. 4

Place the biscuits on a baking tray, brush them with some egg, and bake in the oven at 200°C for 30 minutes until golden.

  5. 5

Reduce the oven temperature to 100°C and bake for another 10 minutes to dry the biscuits well.

💡 Tips and Variations

You can add a pinch of ground cloves for a more intense aroma. If you prefer a sweeter taste, slightly increase the amount of honey.

📦 Storage

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Do not freeze to maintain their crunchiness.
  • Warm slightly in the oven before serving to enhance the aroma.

🍷 Pairing

Pair Nzuddi with a good glass of Marsala Vergine Stravecchio, served at a temperature between 8 and 10 degrees.
